How this artist made the leap to interior design from TV and films

Marissa Zajack, graphic designer for The Politician turned interior designer, adds that “for large spaces, wallpaper will make a bold statement with large patterns.

“I wanted Red Herring to feel timeless, energized, and bathed in a California attitude,” the designer shares. “Downtown Los Angeles is so rich with history, and I tend to pull from the details I see all around me. I played with the splendor of color, Art Deco geometry, soft curves, and splashes of flora and fauna whimsy, such as the mural that stands tall in the restaurant's dining room.”

The jewel box-toned Red Herring offers banquette seating, plush peach-colored chairs and emerald walls, all set alongside the requisite house plants, brass accents, and a splashy mural done by artist Mike Willcox.

Industry graphic and interior designer Marissa Zajack, whom Woodall met on Running With Scissors, “designed the most gorgeous room ever. It feels like a spot you would see in a Ryan Murphy show.”

 

“When we first started the project, Alexis had gone to Miami for the first time, so I started researching the architecture and the colors [of Miami],” Zajack tells AD PRO. Red Herring’s interiors capture an urban, tropical feel, “with a little bit of a nod to Miami and old Los Angeles,” says the designer.

"His Chess and Checkers collection is classic and sophisticated, with curved lines and gorgeous brass details. I'm coveting the Chess Oval Table," says Zajack of the work of the furniture designer, known for his polished wood pieces, who recently returned to West Hollywood's Pacific Design Center.

“I like table lamps for nice ambient light, because there’s nothing like bad lighting on a Zoom," says Zajack, whose current go-to sources online include Y Lighting and Circa Lighting (where she recently purchased a Kelly Wearstler Cleo table lamp).”
